A man took the position you’d typically find from a Karen in Ohio, as he threatened to call ICE on some immigrant employees in Charley’s Cheesesteaks if they didn’t get him the sandwich he ordered on time. A video posted on Instagram detailed the encounter. The clip began with the employee behind the camera asking the local to repeat who they had already threatened to call.
“ICE,” the man responded bluntly, casually munching on a fry. The employee dared him to make good on his promise and see “who is going to make your sandwich.” The exchange started because the customer was unimpressed with the duration it took the employees to get him a sandwich. “We’re just trying to give you the best service,” the employee stated after the disgruntled customer exchanged a couple of words with other employees.
When the person behind the camera kept asking the customer who he had said he was going to call, fed up, he retorted, “Your mom,” before walking out of the store. “Have a great day, sir,” the employee called after him sarcastically before adding, “That’s exactly what I thought.” Many social media users were taken aback by the clip and flooded the comment section with criticisms, while others expressed lament.
“The audacity for you to be a person of color and have those words in your mouth,” a netizen wrote, while another admitted, “At first I was shocked and upset that a man of color would be acting the same way as those who enslaved his people. Then I remembered that both Blacks and Latinos are deep in ICE recruitment. Now I’m just disgusted!” A couple of users pointed out some salient issues: “It gets worse when it’s your own nationality trying to hurt your business. “Envy and pride are dangerous,” one noted.
“This is not ok… People stop telling others who you think might be immigrants that if they don’t do what you want, you’re gonna call ICE on them. This behavior is disgusting!!!” Another fumed, explaining, “Especially if you are a person of color. The deck is already stacked against us, and we need to stop coming for each other and stand together.” This user wrote, “So Spanish people are being harassed by other minorities? Like they don’t have enough to deal with?” Another quipped, “It be the loudest people doing the dumbest thing,” and a third joked, “I just wanna know what kinda sandwich he thought he was gonna get after that.“
