Microsoft has now announced the latest round of free titles that will be available through their Games With Gold promotion for March. For the uninitiated, these games are available for download for the blockbuster price of nothing for Xbox owners that have an Xbox Live Gold account.
March’s Games With Gold kicks off on March 1st with Borderlands 2, available until March 15th. The highly touted cell shaded shooter from Gearbox Studios was a commercial and critical hit upon its release in 2012 with the wise talking robot Claptrap being a fan favorite in the title. The game will be available for Xbox 360 but can also be played on Xbox One via the backward compatibility of the title.
From March 16th to 30th Heavy Weapon will be available for free download. The Xbox 360 title from 2008 was developed by PopCap games and features side scrolling, bullet hell mechanics as you control a tank with some serious firepower. The game doesn’t take itself too seriously as your fight all manner of enemies including giant gorillas, floating heads and alien space ships. The game is also available for Xbox One owners.

Exclusive to Xbox One, beginning March 1st, Layers of Fear will be available as part of the Games With Gold program. The horror title puts you in the skin of a disturbed Victorian painter trying to complete their masterpiece. As the layers of your backstory come to light the secrets you are holding become all the more consuming and frightening.
Games with Gold rounds out March with Evolve, available March 16th to April 15th. The multiplayer asymmetric shooter pits four hunters of varying character classes against a gamer controlled monster. The longer the monster survives and the more he feeds on the animals in the environment the closer he comes to “evolving” into a more ferocious beast. Developer Turtle Rock recently indicated that they will stop working on the game although the servers for the game will continue to be online for the foreseeable future.
