Mariah Carey just can’t win on the family front. Less than a month after the singer suffered a devastating loss, she now has to face her brother in court. Mariah is still in mourning, given that her mother and sister just passed away last month. However, she has to put that aside to wage legal war.
In new court documents, the Queen of Christmas was summoned to physically sit for depositions with her estranged brother, Morgan Carey, before January 31, 2025. Morgan sued his famous sister in 2021 over damaging claims in her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. In the best-selling book, she alleged that her elder brother was often physically abusive and dealt drugs. An excerpt reads, “I was a little girl with very few memories of a big brother who protected me. More often, I felt I had to protect myself from him, and sometimes I would find myself protecting my mother from him too.” The Touch My Body songstress also described Morgan as her “sometimes drug dealing, been-in-the-system, drunk-ass brother.”
In his defamation lawsuit, Morgan denied the allegations, saying Mariah’s words caused “serious damage to his reputation.” He demanded an unspecified amount in damages, but most of his case was tossed last year. The court, however, ruled that Morgan could still pursue damages over passages in his sister’s book related to the drug dealing claims. Hence, the latest ruling. Per InTouch Weekly, Mariah “reserves the right to seek limitations on the scope of discovery.”
Mariah Carey’s ‘Heart Is Broken’ About Mom & Sister’s Deaths Despite Fractured Relationship
The ruling on Mariah’s drama with her brother happened on August 20, just six days before the deaths of her mother, Patricia Carey, and her sister, Alison Carey. She confirmed the heartbreaking demise via a statement to People Magazine.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day. I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed.”
Despite the pain of the double tragedy, fans couldn’t help but highlight Mariah’s broken relationship with her sister. In her memoir, the All I Want For Christmas singer touched on Alison’s addiction struggles. She recalled her sister allegedly forcing her to use drugs and trying to sell her to a pimp for some money. Despite a traumatizing childhood, the pair remained a bit connected until recent years. Per reports, Mariah stopped trying to support Alison’s addiction financially because she didn’t want to be an “enabler.” They didn’t speak until her death. Hopefully, history doesn’t repeat itself with Morgan.
