Martha Stewart got candid about her take on life and death during a recent interview. Needless to say, her plans left a few of her fans rather shocked. The lifestyle icon laid it all on the line and revealed that she knows exactly what her final wishes are and expects them to be carried out to the letter.
It should come as no surprise that at age 84, Martha Stewart has her final wishes all detailed out. It normally doesn’t stun too many people to hear what someone of her advanced age wants carried out when it comes to their death. But Martha has a different way of thinking about life and death, and makes no apologies for the way she wants things taken care of when her time comes.

Some people spend years planning their final arrangements, choosing headstones, urns, or carefully curated memorials. But when Martha Stewart recently shared her end-of-life preference, it wasn’t something anyone could have predicted. In true Martha fashion, the reveal was oddly elegant, a little wild, and delivered with the confidence of a woman who’s been running her life her way for decades.
During a candid chat on the 50+ & Unfiltered podcast, the National Enquirer reports that Martha stated that when it’s her time, she plans to be composted. Not buried. Not cremated. Compost. Just like the animals on her property that she loved and cared for throughout their whole lives.
Stewart explained that when one of her horses passes away, a deep plot is dug in one of her fields, the animal is wrapped in clean white linen, and is laid to rest with dignity on the grounds of her property in her designated pet cemetery.
Martha Stewart Too Busy for Regrets
“When one of my horses dies, we dig a giant hole really deep in one of my fields. We have a pet cemetery. And the horse is wrapped in a clean, white linen sheet and very carefully dropped down into this giant, lovely grave,” she explained. “I want to go there.”
Martha wants the same treatment. It’s her land, her choice, and as she put it, it’s not hurting anyone. For her, the traditional coffin-and-cemetery route simply isn’t appealing. Her confession didn’t exactly land softly online. Some were shocked, others amused. However, plenty of people admitted they weren’t surprised at all. Apparently, a handful of people even predicted she’d choose composting before she said a single word.

To understand her choice, you almost have to understand Martha Stewart herself. She has lived a life filled with unexpected friendships, creative passions, and a surprisingly open attitude toward the strange and unconventional.
She has always embraced a mix of practicality and eccentricity. An outlook that shapes everything from her hosting style to her final wishes. In her world, if something feels right, she sees no reason to pretend otherwise. Being composted fits neatly into that mindset.
Despite the surprising nature of her final wish, Stewart isn’t spending her days fixated on aging. She has said there’s still plenty keeping her busy. It’s her world, her rules, and apparently her soil too. And if anyone is going to turn their final resting place into something efficient, elegant, and a little bit shocking. It was always going to be Marth
