No one likes a cheater, especially game developers. Unfortunately, there is a ton of cheating software out there in the world that helps players cheat in some of their favorite online games. To help combat this, a ton of developers have implemented anti-cheat software that can help flag and ban players trying to get the advantage in a not-so-legal way. However, it just so happens that, like humans, software that detects cheating can also make mistakes. The developer for Marvel Rivals, NetEase, had to issue a public apology on its official Discord server because their anti-cheat software was flagging players simply playing in compatibility layer programs.
What’s a compatibility layer program, you ask? They are programs that allow players to use operating systems that differ from their own in order to improve the performance of whatever game they are playing. This particular issue targeted Linux users using the software Photon. In the apology listed above, community manager James Rivera acknowledged the issue and notified players that the bans that fill that criteria would be lifted. He follows the news with the company’s mission statement of providing players with the best possible gaming environment.
“Our mission is to provide all players with a fair, just, and enjoyable gaming environment. THerefore, preventing and identifying cheaters is one of our top priorities. We have invested significant manpower and resources to improve the speef and accurace of our detection systems. With any any ongoing detection system, there is always room for improvement. We appreciate you assistance in helping us tackle this challenge. If you encounter and cheating behavior, please report it immediately; our reporting system will respong proptly. If you believe you have been wrongly banned, you can appeal yo our customer support team, and we will review your case in a timely manner. You can reach the support team via either in-game or Discord!”
While unfortunate for the players who were wrongfully banned, it’s difficult to be upset with NetEase for attempting to truly provide players with the best possible experience. Fortunately, the players who are wrongly banned will have their accounts redeemed without any issue. If there had been some problem trying to get profile data back after the ban, then I doubt fans would be so cool about this.
There haven’t been any issues since the announcement of previously banned players not being able to redeem their data. Personally, my biggest concern lies in how NetEase can confirm if a person’s ban comes directly from this issue. For example, if I was banned for cheating, can’t I just appeal to get my account back by stating my ban reason as wrongful for having used Photon? I want to hope that this won’t happen, but I also don’t like the possibility of actual cheaters getting a second chance and finding a way around the issue.
