DC Comics had a big showing for Superman comics at New York Comic Con, announcing the Superman Superstars initiative. The initiative will run from January through December 2024 and features ambitious storylines covering the many Superman titles. The biggest announcement about Superstars is that Jason Aaron is joining the creative team for Superman’s Action Comics. Aaron is a prolific comic writer, best known for his work at Marvel comics, including Thor, Wolverine, and The Avengers. Now, the writer will be tackling DC’s most iconic superhero.

Starting with Action Comics #1061, the series will feature rotating creative teams. One writer-artist duo will be in charge of the comic for the arc before switching over to another team in the next arc. Jason Aaron will be part of the first Action Comics team, partnering up with Batman artist John Timms. Aaron’s story arc is “I, Bizarro,” featuring a return of the classic Superman villain.

The rotating creative team for Action Comics is part of Superstars, a yearlong initiative of 2024. After Aaron’s arc, the next Action Comics arc will be a cross-over with the main Superman comic. The cross-over starts on Action Comics #1064 and will be written by Superman writer Joshua Williamson. Artist Rafa Sandoval will be in charge of the artwork for the Action Comics side of the cross-over.

Williamson’s Superman cross-over has the Superfamily team up with Lex Luthor and Lobo to battle against Brainiac and his Czarnian army. Czarnians are the same hyper-powerful species of aliens that Lobo is a part of. The Brainiac cross-over has been brewing since the first issue of Williamson’s Superman comic. Williamson is also doing a Western-centric story arc with Superman, starting with Superman #10 with Bruno Redondo.
