A man allegedly left his dog in a hot car, outside of Maryland‘s Loyola University, for a full hour before a passerby confronted him. According to the individual filming, the car AC was off, and none of the windows were cracked, despite it being a rather warm summer day.
Rather than argue, the dog’s human stated that it wasn’t a big deal and his pet was fine. After which, the person filming invited the man to sit in the hot car for an hour to see how he felt. Seemingly misunderstanding, or perhaps being facetious, the man sat in the car for several seconds before stating that he felt fine.
According to the person filming the incident, University staff entered the conversation with threats to have him arrested for trespassing on the University grounds. The person took to Reddit to write, “I guess anyone can abuse dogs and break the law at Loyola University Maryland as long as you have spent your money there.” Instead of walking away from the dog, the Redditor called law enforcement to follow up on the situation. He stated contentment with how the police handled things, which included issuing the man a fine.
Many People Think the Accuser Didn’t Take Things Far Enough
Reddit has exploded with comments of support for the dog, as well as calls to dox the man who kept the animal locked in the car. Many were remiss that the concerned citizen didn’t smash the car’s windows to let the dog out. However, it’s important to note that only some states legalize breaking into a vehicle to rescue an animal, and Maryland is not one of them. Not everyone seemed bothered by that, though, as one person wrote, “I care more about what is in the car than I do about fines, and I would break glass anyway.“
Others noticed the fact that the negligent individual didn’t seem to realize what the problem was, although it’s unclear if he genuinely didn’t understand or was just using ignorance as an excuse for his behavior. A Redditor stated, “Stupid people shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near animals or kids.” While another echoed, “I find it funny how he sits down in his car with the door open and immediately turns around like, ‘See? I’m in here, and all is good.’“
While everyone held the dog’s human responsible for his actions, some extended their ire to the University as well. In a sentiment similar to the OP’s, a Redditor commented, “So it’s ok for the alumni of Loyola to abuse dogs?” Many thanked the man who posted the video for specifying where the incident took place, so they could make their feelings towards Loyola University known.
It’s safe to say that this individual should have left his dog at home for that particular errand. Or, perhaps, he should adopt a plant instead.
