Maryland’s first day back at school took a chaotic turn this week when a large after-school crowd at a Baltimore plaza ended with a scooter crashing through a bakery’s storefront. Hundreds of teenagers gathered at The Rotunda on Monday afternoon. By the end of the incident, a bakery had a shattered glass entrance, police had several juveniles in custody, and a video of the crash was spreading online.

Security footage from inside the bakery captured the moment the gathering went from rowdy to dangerous.

The incident happened at The Rotunda on West 40th Street in Baltimore on August 24, 2026, which was the first day back for Baltimore City Public Schools, according to Fox Baltimore. Police said as many as 200 students gathered at the plaza after school ended. Security staff called Baltimore Police to the area to help control the crowd.

While officers were there, two girls riding a Lime scooter lost control and crashed through the glass storefront doors of Cinnaholic, a cupcake and cinnamon roll shop at 727 W. 40th St.

Surveillance footage shared by the bakery shows a man standing near the entrance turning around just as the two girls come crashing through the shattered glass and fall onto the floor.

Baltimore Police told Fox Baltimore that the crash was accidental and was not an act of vandalism. Police said the girls lost control of the scooter and hit the door before officers arrived at the scene.

Two electric bicycles also hit a parked vehicle in the plaza’s parking lot during the same gathering.

Amid the chaos, officers also broke up a physical fight involving two other female juveniles. Police later said the two girls were family members who were already involved in a dispute.

In all, three juveniles were taken into custody. They were given referrals and later released to their parents or guardians.

Cinnaholic closed for the rest of the week after the storefront was damaged. Repairs are expected to keep the shop closed until August 31.

Internet Reacts to Maryland Scooter Crash

The crash video later spread across X after being shared by @ExxAlerts. Many users responded with dark humor, while others questioned who would be responsible for paying for the damage.

One commenter joked, “And the cool part is that they will be voters in 2028.” Another focused on the potential cost of the damage, writing, “Who is supposed to pay for the damages? You know people riding these scooters and e-bikes carry zero insurance.”

Other viewers strongly sided with the bakery. One person wrote, “He was holding the door open, and they chose to enter through the closed door. That’s just foolish.”

Another predicted the business could face further problems, writing, “Now their mommas will try & sue this business for putting a store in the way of their daughter’s scooter’s path.” A fifth commenter summed up the frustration by writing, “No respect for other people’s property. Destroyed the scooter and a storefront.”

Following the incident, Baltimore City Public Schools warned students and families about behavior and reminded them of the district’s code of conduct. The district also pointed to the different disciplinary actions that can be taken in response to student behavior.

Some members of the community openly blamed a lack of discipline.

“The kids have taken over. They have no discipline,” Keyana Jackson told Fox Baltimore. She added that “parenting needs to be stronger, policing needs to be stronger.”
