Capitalism has a Maryland woman taking desperate and dangerous measures to get to work; at least that is what many believe. In a bid to get to the office, the resident drove through a crowd gathered for the Laurel Main Street festival.

Bodycam footage of the scene posted on YouTube showed her driving through the street filled with residents, who scampered out of the way to avoid getting hit. According to the police report, the woman explained she had to be at work and needed to leave the street, which was blocked off for the festival.

However, an officer told her she couldn’t leave and offered to call a taxi. But the Maryland woman wasn’t taking no for an answer and took matters into her hands. She immediately exited the car and tore down the barrier before driving into the street. Despite the officer’s screams for her to stop, she paid no attention and continued driving. Following the ordeal, the driver, now identified as 28-year-old Kai Deberry, was arrested and charged with second-degree assault and resisting arrest, among others.

Per the charging documents obtained by The Washington Post, Bostick hit a police officer, who now suffers minor injuries. At a bond hearing on Monday, her attorney argued that she reacted that way because “she panicked about getting into trouble at work.” He described it as an “unfortunate reaction,” before noting that Bostick had no criminal history.

Unsurprisingly, the video caught netizens’ attention, and while some users saw reasons for the woman’s actions, others criticized her. One user suggested the woman acted like that because her livelihood depended on the job. They wrote, “I’m not saying what she is doing is right, but living paycheck to paycheck will make you do some crazy things in order to bring home a paycheck.”

Another observer followed the same line of thought. The user wrote, “She’s obviously having a breakdown. She is not ok. She isn’t rational. The reality is in America, your employment can literally be your life or death. Your health and dental are tied to it. Your housing and sustenance.”

Others lashed at the Maryland woman for risking people’s lives for her benefit. “Entitled Main-character syndrome,” wrote one critic, and another replied, “Privileged a**hole thinks she is free to travel at whatever time she wants for whatever she wants.” A third person added, “This lady and her audacity to endanger so many people’s lives. What a POS.”

The judge declared that the 28-year-old was a danger to the community and scheduled her trial for July 18.
