It’s happened again; an American citizen is being targeted for deportation after being sent an email that asked her to deport herself. Yes, you read that correctly: deport herself. There have been various cases as of late where federal employees have all but snatched American citizens off the streets to deport them to random locations. However, this time, the government is sending emails instead.
Massachusetts native and attorney Nicole Micheroni didn’t believe that the email she received from the Department of Homeland Security was real. In fact, the opening sentence, “It is time for you to leave the United States,” sounds absolutely insane. However, she soon learned just how serious the federal government was.
Micheroni posted the email to BlueSKy, explaining that she realizes it’s a mistake but points to the question of what happens to those who don’t realize it’s a mistake or genuinely do as the email says. Fortunately, she explains in detail the difference between criminal and immigration parole as remarked in the email.
Basically, the Department of Homeland Security will allow lawful entry into the United States using this parole system. She compares it to the release of prisoners back to their communities after they’ve served their time. This was originally managed via an app called CBP One, which was introduced during the Biden Administration. Now, the app has been changed to CBP Home and instead helps immigrants deport themselves.
“the last line in the letter that accidentally went out to a ton of Ukrainians said something like, “if you choose to remain in the US, the federal government will find you” so dystopian.”
Micheroni also says that since the email she received was part of a mass email chain sent to various people even outside of Massachusetts, their email addresses were likely scraped from the application. However, she never signed up on the app, so there’s no clear indication as to how her information was retrieved.
The Trump Administration has made it incredibly difficult for immigrants and everyday people to live their lives. There have been far too many cases of citizens being mistakenly deported or approached by ICE agents despite having legal standing to be here. I feel as though it’s only a matter of time before an irreversible mistake is made by Trump’s officials, radicalizing people to act for change.
Currently, Republicans are rescinding their positive thoughts on the President, as his changes to tariffs have caused it to be difficult for businesses of all kinds to receive manufacturing products. I’d like to think that trying to scare the wrong people via deportation will eventually lead to more people distrusting him.
