Friends favorites Chandler and Monica, played by Matthew Perry and Courteney Cox, captured the collective hearts of fans with their endearing love story. Their quirky relationship evolved throughout the series, from a romance in London to a beautiful wedding and, ultimately, starting a family. But it seems that at one point, the writers contemplated throwing a wrench into their fairytale. Recently, Lisa Cash, who appeared as an extra in a 1999 episode, revealed Chandler was meant to cheat on Monica with her character. However, the late Perry spoke against it, prompting the writers to axe the storyline.
Chandler and Monica’s Love Story On Friends Could Have Ended Badly
A report has revealed that Perry played a crucial role in developing the romance between Chandler and Monica on Friends. During a recent interview with TMZ, Cash opened up about the heartbreaking storyline fans would have witnessed had the actor not spoken up. She told the outlet that she was to appear as an extra on a 1999 episode in season 5, titled “The One in Vegas: Part 1.” But according to Cash, there was more to the role than a mere extra. The actress revealed that initially, Perry’s character, Chandler, was to cheat on Monica with her character. Afterward, she went into detail about how it would have happened.
Cash shared that the original scene involved Chandler and Monica getting into a heated argument. Then, Cash’s character would bring room service to Chandler’s hotel room in Las Vegas. Ultimately, Chandler would hit things off with the hotel staff, eventually cheating on his beloved Monica.
Matthew Perry Stops the Cheating Scene
Although the storyline would have added more drama to the show, it didn’t sit right with Perry. Cash revealed that after they finished rehearsing the scene, the late actor walked up to the writers and asked them to scrap it. According to Cash, even though having a co-starring role with Perry would have taken her career to the next level, axing the scene was a good move. Having Chandler cheat on Monica could have changed the course of the show, possibly making many fans lose interest. Thankfully, scrapping the scene did not stop Cash from appearing in that episode. She ended up playing the role of a flight attendant in Ross and Rachel’s scene.
