Max Steel began life as a merchandise driven cartoon in the year 2000. And to be honest, you don’t need to be too familiar with the original cartoon. Since the new trailer suggests they have updated the story.

If you need plot clarification in addition to the trailer, here’s IMDb’s summary.

“When teenage Max McGrath discovers his body can generate the universe’s most powerful energy, he must bond with the only being able to contain it – a mysterious techno-organic extraterrestrial named Steel. United as the superhero Max Steel, the two friends must combat an alien menace and unlock the secrets of their past.”

Surprisingly complex storylines were the hallmark of the original series. Therefore fans will be interested to see how it translates to the big screen. Filming wrapped in May and will hit screens October 14th. Merchandise driven shows don’t always do well when adapted. And anyone who has seen Masters of the Universe can back us up on that.

Yet, based on the trailer, there’s a large focus on the emotional side of Max’s adventure. So it seems like the movie might avoid being a CGI fight nightmare like Bay’s Transformers. In an era of adapting old series for new movies, a bit of extra depth might be nice.

In addition, this is Max’s first live action movie, but not his first movie full stop. Mr. Steel has nine direct to DVD animated movies. And he even has a video game on the Dreamcast.

Max Steel’s fame is not huge like Transformers. But, done right, this movie has the potential to go far. Stay tuned to the Nerd Stash for more news.
