As we’ve said before, video game movies are a dicey prospect. Games based on movies don’t do much better. Games based on a movie based on a game, aren’t a good bet either.
But hope springs eternal and, with each new big screen adaption, we can hope that they’ll strike gold. And they damn well better strike gold with this latest adaption; from the early years of the industry comes Capcom’s blue bomber, Mega Man.
For those of you who wandered onto this website by accident, allow me to explain; Mega Man is a series about a blue armored robot created by the brilliant and kindly scientist Doctor Light. Originally created as a lab assistant, Mega Man was upgraded to a combat robot to thwart the world domination attempts of the villainous Doctor Wily. Mega Man is most famous for his ability to copy the abilities of defeated robot masters.
This is a fairly simple premise, so you’d hope that even FOX won’t be able to screw this one up.
It must be said that Mega Man is an interesting choice for an adaption. Following his debut in 1987, Mega Man stood shoulder to shoulder with gaming icons like Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog. But while Mario and Sonic still release new games, the blue bomber has been largely neglected by Capcom in recent years. The closest we’ve had to a next gen Mega Man game is having him appear in Smash Bros. Are there enough Mega Man fans left out there to justify a movie? Or are FOX counting on the kid-friendly premise to draw in a brand new audience amongst younger cinema goers?
What do you guys think? Will Mega Man: The Movie be the next ‘Wreck-it Ralph’, or the next Super Mario Bros: The Movie?
