The first person superhero video game genre is pretty sparse. In fact, I can think of no other entry in that category than the upcoming Megaton Rainfall. Developer, Pentadimensional Games, has now released gameplay footage of the title giving gamers a chance to see what saving earth will look like.
Megaton Rainfall lets you fill the shoes of an indestructible super-being that has some pretty amazing powers. Of course, you have the gift of flight but the game cranks this up to eleven. You will be able to accelerate from a stand still to Mach 10 in only five seconds. Yes, that is ten times the speed of sound. With this type of power, you’ll find yourself visiting the sun, the moon and everything in between in your battle against hordes of alien invaders.
The super powers available in the game are a two edged sword though. As developer, Alfonso del Cerro, describes:
In Megaton Rainfall the biggest menace for the humans is often yourself. Each new super power you gain has a dark side you must avoid. Your basic shot destroys entire buildings every time you miss your target. Your telekinesis can prevent enemy grenades from damaging the humans, but it can also send vehicles careening down the street. The gigaton blast can destroy an enemy mothership… or the entire city. And you don’t want to do the aliens’ job.
This dynamic of potentially causing more harm than good is further expressed in the game’s leaderboards that track both time and human casualties. As we saw in Man of Steel, humans tend to be bothered when their superheroes destroy their cities.
Megaton Rainfall will be available on all of the Sony platforms plus Steam. That means the game supports Sony VR and is at full 4K resolution on the PS Pro. The game is slated for release on September 26, 2017
