Meghan Markle Throws Jab at Dolly Parton for Refusing to Work with Her on Netflix: ‘She’s Mocking Others’

What a coincidental choice for a song

Prince Harry’s wife Meghan Markle has seemingly had a good trip to DC for her speech at Fortune’s event, based on how she presented herself in her latest post on Instagram. The video shows a summary of her seeing the sights of the country’s capital, as well as her experience as a speaker for the Most Powerful Women. However, the song she used for the post is Dolly Parton‘s famous “9 to 5,” which could very well be considered a subtle jab at the A-lister artists, concerning her and Meghan’s history.

“Crimes Against Dolly Parton, or Meghan’s latest Instagram post,” remarks a Reddit user, saying that the Duchess of Sussex’s DC trip was not what the singer had in mind when she wrote that classic song. “This is because Dolly refused to work with her,” pointed out a commenter. Many will recall that, back in June, Dolly Parton allegedly rejected Meghan Markle’s offer to make a guest appearance on her Netflix show, With Love, Meghan.

The Nerve with Maureen Callahan podcast reported that “Her team was livid” that the “Love Is Like a Butterfly” singer didn’t want to get involved with the wannabe A-lister’s shenanigans. Naturally, that wouldn’t have sat well with Meghan, seeing how much she wanted to associate herself with an iconic star like Parton. Rumors of Mariah Carey appearing on the show’s Christmas special have also circulated, but many have shut it down as nothing but nonsense from Meghan’s PR team. And it would seem Prince Harry’s partner could be holding bitterness about Parton’s refusal; otherwise, she wouldn’t have chosen such a song from such a specific singer, fans believe.

Besides the subtle jab at Dolly Parton, others suspect that Meghan Markle also chose “9 to 5” to boast what a busy businesswoman she is, with her private jet trip to DC and all for Fortune’s event. “The gap between the soundtrack (working-class solidarity) and the visuals (wealth and privilege) reveals the emptiness of her woman of the people performance,” comments a Redditor. “She’s mocking others,” adds another. Many criticized her for being a tryhard influencer when all that she’s done has not been impressive at all.

More Sussex followers also slam Meghan Markle for trying to “cosplay” her rival Kate Middleton, Prince William’s wife, in the cockpit of her private jet. Princess Catherine recently did a flight simulation during a royal engagement, so many were quick to connect that with Meghan’s shot in her video. Reddit users claim that her “monochromatic white outfit” and “straight hair” during the Fortune event were more evidence that Meghan loves “comparing herself to the future Queen.” This might be pushing the assumptions a little far, but using a Dolly Parton song as a jab would make sense, given how much the As Ever founder was hurt by the rejection.
