It seems like unfortunate events aren’t stopping anytime soon. A Mexican navy ship crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, which caused its three masts to be destroyed. According to AP, the crash resulted in the death of two people, with “at least 19 people” on the Mexican navy ship needing medical treatment. The two who died were part of four cases where serious injuries were suffered. So far, the cause of the collision is still under investigation. Luckily, the Mexican navy ship, called the Cuauhtemoc, didn’t injure anyone on the bridge or the people who were standing and filming while on the nearby pier.
This isn’t the first time the Cuauhtemoc takes this journey since it does so every year at the end of classes at the Naval Military School. The ship, however, wasn’t supposed to head toward the Brooklyn Bridge in the first place. It has been reported that a mechanical error took place, which might have led to this costly mistake.
In a video filmed by onlookers, you can see how dozens of people are standing on the pier and filming the Mexican navy ship as it crashes into the bridge. Some people, wisely, start to back away, while others were quite dumb and kept filming even with the ship heading toward them. In a horrifying scene, the video zooms in on the Mexican navy ship, and you can see people hanging from the mast. Some were dangling from such a height while using their hands. They had to wait until help arrived. The entire situation is terrifying.
People React to the Mexican Navy Ship’s Crash
People were left in shock and also horrified at the sight of the Mexican navy ship’s crash. Unfortunately, some people ignored how serious the situation was and focused on trivial matters or made jokes. One person wrote, “That looked expensive.” Another replied by saying, “Very. Bridge hits are very expensive.” Someone also joked about what happened as they wrote, “The start of the Mexican-American war part deux.” As not everyone knew the details behind the Mexican navy ship’s crash, someone thought that it was headed in that direction. “No one thought to ask how big the ship was?” they asked. One Redditor else offered their own insight as they wrote:
“Calculating the height of tide to ensure safe transit in harbor is standard practice for any ship arriving or departing from a berth. Whoever the shipmaster and navigator of this vessel are, they f**ked up big time.”
While some people kept joking about the entire situation, others realized how serious it was. “Dang you can see some of the crew hang on at the top,” someone pointed out. Another said, “Holy shit. Were there sailors up in those masts?”. Since people in America are currently facing deportations, someone brought this into the conversation. “They for sure getting deported,” they wrote. This devastating crash is heartbreaking. Sending prayers to all who were abroad the Mexican navy ship.
