We all know that the tipping culture in our country is all over the place. If we’re lucky, we tend to find a few establishments that make tipping completely optional and never turn it into an aggressive situation or employ ridiculous tactics to earn more money. However, there are some cases where establishments go out of their way to ask for absurd tips, which just makes the business look bad. An example of the latter happened in Michigan, where a restaurant kindly recommended that customers leave a tip of up to 99%.
If you don’t believe us, you can take a look at the image above, which shows the receipt from a customer who visited an establishment in Michigan. While the OP didn’t disclose the name of the place, they showed their receipt, which had some questionable tipping amounts.
As you can see, the receipt shows the total amount of $62.54. Judging by the items, we imagine this is a restaurant/bar of sorts, and while some Redditors think the prices are a bit high, well, that will depend on where the establishment is in Michigan. In any case, what’s shocking is the part you can see at the very end of the receipt, which has several “recommended” tipping amounts.
The first one, which would make anyone fall off their chair, says: “Suggested Tip: 99% (Tip $61.91, Total $124.45).” This is almost double what the customer paid for what they bought, making this recommendation egregious in many ways. Beyond that, this establishment in Michigan, besides the 99% tip, also suggests tips of 35% and 25%, both still absurd amounts to ask.
What makes the whole situation even more fun is how the receipt ends with a “You look fantastic today! We are glad you are here.” It is just a strange contrast after suggesting such ridiculous tips that almost double the amount a person consumes.
Naturally, this shocked and angered many people who were not very nice to the business.
“This is the kind of thing that gets you a 0% tip,” commented Elsecaller.
“Yeah, seeing that on the bill would mean it’s the last time I ever go there,” said AcceptableHamster.
The truth is, many businesses have implemented some strange policies or tactics regarding tipping. While it’s optional, the guilt-tripping and suggestions are out of place and quite annoying, if you ask us. Then again, customers have the last word, so if they decide not to leave tips, they can also pay, walk away, and never return.
