While many Americans have been focused on the recent wildfires in LA, no one could have expected a house fire of ‘pure evil’ in Grand Rapids. Michigan mom Roconda Singleton attempted to kill her three daughters by burning them to death in their sleep. She did so by removing all seven smoke alarms in her home before proceeding to douse the rooms and furniture in lighter fluid. Fortunately, her 7 and 10-year-old daughters escaped with minor injuries, but her eldest 12-year-old girl didn’t survive her severe burns.
“This is a shockingly cruel, unimaginable crime committed by a mom against her three kids,” stated GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom. The Michigan mother initially dared to feign ignorance of what happened during an interview with the police, per Fox17. However, she eventually admitted to her crime, bluntly saying, “I did it. I am not going to sit here and play like I am the victim.” Regardless of whether Singleton has a serious “mental health issue,” the mom will face a lifetime in prison if convicted of arson.
The Mother Committed the Crime Despite ‘No Prior Child Abuse’
Needless to say, commenters of this Michigan news shared their shock and dread of the horrendous situation. “This is heartbreaking. No child deserves this,” reads the most upvoted comment. One says the mother is “pure evil,” while another states she has a “twisted soul.” “The world is so darn dark,” remarks another. “I swear I would rather be a dog. They treat their puppies better than most parents anymore.” Bizarrely enough, Singleton doesn’t have any records of “prior child abuse,” according to Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker.
It appears that Singleton perhaps planned to burn with her family, as her 10-year-old claims that “she just wanted to lay down on her bed while her room was lighted up with fire.” The girl is regarded by her loved ones as a hero, as she did her best to save her sisters and mother. It goes without saying that the daughter’s disdain for Singleton and her actions is very strong. “I want to say that she should be locked up for life for killing my sister,” expressed the 10-year-old. “I want to know; why did she have to do that to her? She didn’t deserve that.”
As of writing, over $11k of the $14k goal has been reached on GoFundMe, which was started by Patricia Robinson, a relative of the victims’ family. This is indeed a tragic and traumatic experience for the loved ones of the deceased 12-year-old daughter, but it’s encouraging to see others doing their best to support the family during this time.
