Unfortunately for many, health care is among the most expensive things in the country. And while there are ways to mitigate rising costs, some authorities are looking for ways to make it more accessible. In this case, we’re referring to Michigan, where the local government has made strides to make it cheaper for everyone, to the point that it has now eliminated around $200 million in medical debt. As expected, residents are celebrating this as a great step toward a better healthcare system.
Several sources have recently reported that Michigan has eliminated a debt of around $74 million in medical expenses for at least 70,000 citizens. This is only the second round of medical debt elimination; the first wiped out around $144 million, bringing the total to more than $200 million.
This news has been a pleasant surprise for many, especially since Governor Whitmer has said that Michigan residents shouldn’t struggle to pay medical bills. Now, while this relief fund of sorts has helped many citizens, there are still those suffering from medical debt, but at least the numbers keep decreasing with each wipe.
And while this is great, some believe that these huge medical debts shouldn’t happen in the first place. There’s still backlash over medical costs, as they seem to create a snowball effect in the state, with some people ending up bankrupt just to cover medical treatments. Yet, some residents think this is a good first step, and one that will certainly help the majority of the population.
Michigan Redditors Praise The Government’s Recent Efforts
While Redditors usually criticize anything coming from the government, this time it was the opposite, as many started congratulating those in charge of making health care less punishing and costly for people.
“I applaud the effort. Being healthy shouldn’t bankrupt anyone.“
On the other hand, some Redditors remain somewhat pessimistic, believing some of these situations shouldn’t occur at all.
“Decent first step, but they need to keep pushing and making additional changes.“
“That does nothing to fix the problem.“
Despite negativity from some Redditors, most think this is great and hope to see another wave of medical debt elimination, as it should really help people with low incomes who are struggling to pay for medical tests, treatments, or something else entirely.
