Michigan Worries About Future as Economy Pushes Farmers to Sell Prize Orchards: ‘Probably going to be turned into data centers’

Data centers everywhere

Michigan farmers are selling prized land from their farms, and residents have begun worrying about the state’s future. Locals from Michigan are painting a bleak picture of the future, fearing that some of this land will be purchased by wealthy landowners who could use it to build data centers.

As reported by Realtor.com, multiple Michigan farmers are selling their land due to economic pressure and climate change. Cherry farmers interviewed by the outlet blamed a constant change in weather patterns, as well as the economy, for the decision.

According to them, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find reliable seasonal workers, and production costs are spiraling out of control due to inflation. All of these factors affect profitability and are among the main reasons Michigan farmers are leaving the industry.

Michigan Residents Alarmed About Growth of Data Centers

On Reddit’s r/Michigan, residents lamented the future of these local farms and dreaded for the future. One of them said, “I met a cherry farmer at a wedding a year or two ago, really strong pride in the work they did. They had a big weird freeze and thaw, or maybe hail that year, and it ruined a huge amount of trees, and the financial situation he was explaining was wild. It is a bummer to be forced to sell due to economic conditions.”

Others lamented that “this is going to ruin the Michigan cherry. It will become all about making it as cheap as possible and maximizing profit. That is, if the corpos even keep the orchards.” Some people went even further, guessing that the land would “probably going to be turned into data centers.”

Data centers have been a contentious issue among Michigan residents, and public outcry against them has grown in recent years. Earlier this year, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was criticized for defending the construction of additional data centers in the state.

One seemingly sad Michigan resident wrote, “The plan is working. Imagine all the property available for sale as the economy tanks and only the billionaires are left with cash to burn.”

It remains to be seen how these lands will be used in the future, but residents are dreading the future, as it seems that Michigan could soon stop being a land of cherry farms and turn into something else entirely.
