Mid-Performance Protest Turns Shrek Into a Statement at Denver Theatre: ‘This is a Huge Deal’

I’m glad they stood their ground

There have been various conversations happening all across the United States of America as of late. Some of these conversations are more positive than others, but many of them are deeply rooted in the more controversial things happening right now. In Denver, Colorado, a theatre troupe paused their production of Shrek in the middle to show their support for a particular number that they were asked not to perform traditionally.

Fortunately, there are many people out there who would rather jeopardize their careers than censor things that are really of no offense to anyone. It’s something we shouldn’t have to see so commonly, but the more we do, the bigger a deal it becomes.

The above video was posted to the TikTok account @patrickjclarke, who really has nothing to do with the play being performed. Instead, he decided to go to the PACE Center to watch a performance of Shrek: The Musical, where he witnessed the cast stopping the production to make an announcement.

According to the person speaking, they had rehearsed a version of the song Let Your Freak Flag Fly that involved the waving of rainbow flags. Unfortunately, they were asked not to fly those particular flags during the number. However, the cast decided during their intermission that they were going to do so in solidarity, but just wanted to make sure that the audience was aware of this as well.

Then, the video immediately cuts to the musical number in full. Towards the end of the performance, you can see the actors toward the back of the stage lift and wave two rainbow flags, followed by an eruption of applause from the audience.

People in the comments were astounded by the bravery of the theatre troupe, with one of the top comments even saying, “For people who aren’t in the theater world. This is a huge deal. Breaking the fourth wall doesn’t happen unless scripted or safety based. So doing this in the middle of the show is brave. Courageous. Outstanding. And above all what theater is about.“

Others were a little bit more confused as to why this was a point of contention at all, saying, “Going to the theater and being mad over a rainbow flag is like going to an Italian restaurant and being mad over an Italian flag.”

Fortunately, it appears that everyone in the audience was reciprocative of the message being told, and agreed with what the actors were saying. It’s a great sight to see in a time where so much of the news involves more negative content.
