Minecraft How to Craft a Soul Torch
This article is over 3 years old and may contain outdated information.

The Soul Torch is a crafted light source in Minecraft that emits a blue flame instead of the yellowish-orange fire seen on a standard Torch. Not only do the colors differ between these Torches, but the light level cast by these non-solid blocks also are not the same. The regular Torch emits a light level of 14, creating a heat aura capable of melting nearby snow and ice. On the other hand, the Soul Torch features a light level of 10 and is noticeably darker when placed beside its standard variant. So naturally, crafting and using Soul Torches to light one’s home is far from practical in Minecraft.

Players will need three resources to craft a Soul Torch in Minecraft: Coal, a Stick, and Soul Sand. Coal is a common material found within mines and underground caves, and Sticks are extremely easy to obtain from logging trees. Conversely, Soul Sand might be a bit more challenging to acquire, relying on the RNG of world generation.

Thanks to the footage provided by Minecraft YouTuber JayDeeMC, players can have a good understanding of how Soul Torches and related blocks are made. For better clarification, below is an index providing details about each resource, potential substitute materials, and where to find each item for crafting the Soul Torch in Minecraft.

Crafting Material Obtainment Process Potential Substitute
Coal
  • Coal has the greatest distribution range compared to any other mineral in-game, as it can be found anywhere between Y:256 to Y:0.
  • According to Fantasy Topics, Coal has the highest chance of spawning between Y:80 to Y:100, with 92 being the optimal level.
  • Charcoal
    • This resource is made by burning any kind of wood within a Furnace.
Stick
  • On the 3×3 crafting grid, place one wooden plank on top of another to produce Sticks ×4.
  • The wood type does not matter for Soul Torches in Minecraft.
Soul Sand
  • Soul sand naturally generates within the Nether realm and Ancient Cities.
  • In the Nether, players can find this block in Nether Fortresses, Bastion Remnants, Nether Wastes, and Soul Sand Valleys.
  • Ancient Cities, a biome found deep in the underground layers of the Overworld, can also contain Soul Sand.
  • Soul Soil, the byproduct of destroying a Soul Campfire, can also be used to craft a Soul Torch.
