From the Mines of Moria to the caverns of Deep Rock Galactic, stonecutting is a time-honored tradition. It doesn’t get much more simple than breaking rocks, but in Minecraft, stonecutting lays the foundation for so much else. The Stonecutter allows you to efficiently construct stone buildings, and it requires only one ingredient per recipe, minimizing waste. If you’re open to five-finger discounts, you can simply waltz into a village mason’s home and steal a Stonecutter from them. If you can’t find a mason (or are above stealing), however, it’s time to get crafty. Here’s how to make a Stonecutter in Minecraft.

While balloons require you to mess with particles and bend science to your will, the Stonecutter is a simple device with simple requirements. All you need are three blocks of stone and a single iron ingot. To get started you’ll also need a Furnace and a Crafting Table. Here’s what you need to do next:
- Mine 3 cobblestone blocks
- Smelt the cobblestone in a furnace to produce 3 stone
- Mine iron ore underground
- Smelt the iron ore to produce an iron ingot
- Place the iron bar above the three stone blocks on the 3×3 crafting grid
Cobblestone is one of the most common blocks in Minecraft, attainable by mining stone blocks. You can also collect stone blocks directly by mining with a Silk Touch enchanted pickaxe. You can find iron chunks within caves and ravines as well as in random chests throughout the world, so keep an eye open. Pay attention to your surroundings and you can get the raw materials for a Stonecutter almost anywhere.
Build a bridge. Sculpt a mountain. Craft your very own castle. All it takes is a quarry, a Stonecutter, and time.
Stone Varieties
Making a Stonecutter will make your Minecraft life much easier as it can skip certain crafting steps. Chiseled bricks? You can get as many as you’d like in no time at all. The Stonecutter can also produce one block of stairs per block of stone, while the Crafting Table requires 6 blocks to craft 4 sets of stairs. Here are all the kinds of blocks you can use with the Stonecutter:
- All stone varieties such as smooth, bricks, mossy, and cobblestone
- All varieties of sandstone
- Granite, diorite, andesite
- Prismarine
- Quartz
- Purpur
- Nether bricks
- Blackstone
- End stone

What are you waiting for? Grab a pickaxe and get to work building your new stone empire. The children yearn for the mines.
