A Mississippi officer threatened to arrest a black woman after she and a group of friends accused an establishment of racism for allegedly refusing them service.
The incident allegedly took place at Sippin Silo, a wine bar where a group of 10 black women claimed they were refused service while trying to celebrate a birthday. The women later accused the establishment of racism in post shared online. It appeared that the bar contacted police, prompting an officer to respond to the scene. The group and some viewers online believed the officer became aggressive during the interaction that followed.
The officer initially told the women that they were being accused of cursing and causing a commotion. The group responded that they had not done so inside the establishment and said that some of them also worked for the police department. As the women continued defending themselves, the officer appeared to become more assertive. “I’m gonna give the orders now. You’re gonna listen. That’s how this is gonna go,” he told them.
As the women continued talking, the officer demanded that three of them provide their driver’s licenses. One of the women began arguing with him, prompting the officer to walk toward her, point at her, and threaten to arrest her if she did not hand over her license. The woman stepped back, seemingly attempting to de-escalate the situation, but the officer took another step toward her and continued following her as she moved away, even after she began taking out her license.
“I’m this close to placing you in handcuffs,” the officer told her. A female officer then arrived, and the group attempted to address her instead and explain what had happened. Despite this, the male officer continued approaching the same woman and told her that he had repeatedly asked her to hand over her driver’s license and that she had refused. This prompted viewers to point out that, based on the video, the officer appeared to have threatened to arrest her after asking for the license only once.
“If you don’t obey law enforcement orders, it’s gonna be escalated,” the officer added. The group then continued speaking with the female officer about what they said had happened inside the bar. The women believed their treatment was connected to their race. “We’re black in Mississippi,” one of them told the female officer. “We aren’t causing a disturbance. The woman who shared the video also criticized the officer’s behavior, saying he was the kind of police officer she would not want her children to encounter. “This is the kind of weasel cop I would hate our sons run into because look at how he behaved with a woman,” she wrote.
