Mortal Kombat’s brief mention in The Game Awards 2025’s best fighting category was uneventful; however, when the Street Fighter cast arrived on stage, they pulled off a roast that I’m pretty sure wasn’t on anyone’s Bingo card. Andrew Schulz, playing Dan Hibiki in Street Fighter, dunks on the Mortal Kombat 2 film. Something that didn’t go unanswered by the cast and director of the next Mortal Kombat movie themselves.
After a neat trailer showcasing the upcoming Street Fighter movie directed by Kiato Sakurai, the cast showed up bringing energy and, well, some of the WWE Superstars onto the scene. However, the positive vibes were quickly turned into a joke about a rival franchise, sparking a controversy that’s heating up faster than the fire in Scorpions’ kitchen.
Throwing a disrespectful jab from out of nowhere, Andrew Schulz, a comedian and actor known for his roles at Run, Kill Tony, and Fake News at Night, calls out the cast of the Mortal Kombat 2 on stage, followed by the statement that “they didn’t come, they don’t care about you, they care about money.” Ouch.
First came the director of Mortal Kombat 2, Todd Garner, hoping for both movies to be “huge,” then responding, “I don’t climb over others to get ahead.” Solid and well thought out. But the joke didn’t just pass by Max Huang playing Kung Lao after he literally called out the comedian by “Clown! Send me location!“
As Max Huang’s post is going viral, Lewis Tan, who plays Cole Young in the upcoming MK sequel, also responded to the controversy. The comments on the post are all about finishing off Andrew Schulz ASAP in the gory MK-style to an extent that even the “lifelong Street Fighter” fans beg Kung Lao to “please Finish Him.”
Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter have been rivals in the fighting game scene since the 90s, when the two franchises started grabbing attention with their unique styles and themes. However, a crossover between the champions of the realms and the street fighters has never happened, and this beef might be the only Kombat we’ll get from the two long-running franchises.
