A recent tweet from Activision claims that the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has set a new record for engagement with the most recent trilogy despite the game being panned by both critics and players. The same tweet also claims a new record has been set with the game’s new zombies mode, although the exact nature of that record isn’t made abundantly clear.
The latest Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 marks a number of interesting landmarks for the wildly popular first-person shooter franchise. It’s the first time a Call of Duty series like Modern Warfare or Black ops has received back-to-back installments since the original trilogy back in the mid-2000s, when in the past Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and more recently Sledgehammer would routinely trade off the yearly releases. It also faced concerning backlash from many of the players, hitting a drastically low 1.8 user score on Metacritic. Despite the negativity, however, Activision claims the game is doing well.
Record Engagement for Modern Warfare 3
The announcement from Activision about the record engagement comes just 11 days after the game’s initial launch. The tweet does not specify the exact numbers Activision is referring to, so it’s unclear exactly what the engagement on MW3 is like in comparison to the other two games in the trilogy, or even how it stacks up against other titles in the franchise.
A Call of Duty game receiving internet backlash and still picking up a lot of engagement is not an unheard of story. Back in 2016, the reveal trailer for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was incredibly controversial, and it quickly became one of the most disliked videos on YouTube with more than three million dislikes. Despite that, Infinite Warfare was the highest-selling game of the year, outpacing shooters with much higher ratings like Battlefield 1 and The Division.
Activision ends the tweet by promoting the beginning of Season 1 in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 which begins on December 6th.
