2023 was a great year for movies, and 2024 is hot on its heels. Because of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, studios delayed many films, so we’ve got some incredible movies to look forward to. In fact, with the amount of sequels coming to theaters, this year might go down in history as the year of the sequel. So, let’s take a look at some of the most anticipated movies set to release in 2024.
Dune: Part Two
The sequel to 2021’s Dune might be 2024’s most anticipated movie, as it was one of the most high-profile delays out of 2023. Now releasing on March 1, 2024, Denis Villeneuve is once again at the helm of Dune: Part Two. The film will continue the events of Frank Herbert’s novel, picking up from the end of Dune with Paul Atreides with the Fremen in the deserts of Arrakis. Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, and Javier Bardem will all be returning for the sequel, and they will be joined by Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, and Christopher Walken.
Mickey 17
The only anticipated 2024 movie on this list that isn’t part of a franchise is Mickey 17, the next film written and directed by Bong Joon-ho. It is based on a 2022 book by Edward Ashton called Mickey7. The movie follows an employee of a corporation seeking to colonize a new world, who is cloned after death. It stars Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. As the film is currently set to release on March 29, 2024, the first trailer for Mickey 17 should be dropping soon.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
It might be too cold to bust ghosts in the latest installment of the Ghostbusters franchise, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Gil Kenan and Jason Reitman wrote this film, as well as the previous entry, Ghostbusters: Afterlife. While Reitman directed Afterlife, Kenan is directing Frozen Empire. The sequel sees the return of Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson. Frozen Empire follows the Spengler family as they move back to New York City and deal with the plague freezing all life, the Death Chill. It is scheduled to be released on March 29, 2024.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
While it takes place centuries after Matt Reeves’ Planet of the Apes trilogy, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is still one of the most anticipated movies set to release in 2024. Directed by Wes Ball, the film takes place roughly 300 years after War of the Planet of the Apes, in an ape-ruled world where Caesar’s original teachings have been warped by another ape, Proximus Caesar. It is scheduled to be released on May 24, 2024, and stars Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, and William H. Macy.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Another entry in the Mad Max franchise is one of the most anticipated movies of 2024. George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is scheduled to be released on May 24, 2024. It is a prequel and a spin-off to the 2015 film, Mad Max: Fury Road. Rather than focusing on Max, the movie will focus on the backstory of Charlize Theron’s character Imperator Furiosa. In Furiosa, she is being portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy. The film also stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Nathan Jones, and Angus Sampson.
Inside Out 2
Get ready to feel something in the follow-up to one of Pixar’s most successful films, Inside Out 2. Directed by Kelsey Mann, the sequel to 2015’s Inside Out is slated to release on June 14, 2024. It will follow the events of the first film, with Riley a little older and feeling some new emotions. There is a shake-up in this film’s cast, with Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling not returning reportedly due to pay disputes. However, Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, and Lewis Black will be returning as Joy, Sadness, and Anger, respectively. Maya Hawke is joining the voice cast as Anxiety.
Deadpool 3
While we are currently in one of the largest gaps between MCU movies, Deadpool 3 might just be worth the wait. The sequel to 2018’s Deadpool 2 will be released on July 26, 2024. Shawn Levy will be directing this installment, while Ryan Reynolds will be returning as the titular anti-hero. It will bring Deadpool from the Fox X-Men universe into the MCU. That’s not all, as Hugh Jackman will also be returning to his iconic role of Wolverine. Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, and Leslie Uggams also reprise their roles from the original films.
Beetlejuice 2
Someone must have said his name three times because Betelgeuse is back in one of the most anticipated movies of 2024, Beetlejuice 2. Tim Burton has returned to direct the sequel to his classic horror comedy from 1988. Michael Keaton will be returning as the titular character, alongside Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara as Lydia and Delia Deetz, respectively. In addition to the returning cast members, Jenna Ortega will be playing Lydia’s daughter Astrid. The film will be released on September 6, 2024.
Joker: Folie à Deux
Brace yourselves, a Joker musical is coming to theaters in 2024. The highly anticipated sequel to 2019’s Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux will be released on October 4, 2024. Todd Phillips is returning to direct Folie à Deux, with Joaquin Phoenix also returning as Arthur Fleck / Joker. Picking up from the events of the first film, the Joker will be in Arkham Asylum where he meets Dr. Harleen Quinzel (later Harley Quinn), played by Lady Gaga. Zazie Beetz is also expected to return, while Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener are reportedly joining the cast.
Gladiator 2
Ridley Scott is gracing us with another long-awaited sequel with the release of Gladiator 2. The sequel to 2000’s Russell Crowe epic, Gladiator, will follow the now-adult nephew of Commodus, Lucius Verus, who will be played by Paul Mescal. While Connie Nielsen is returning as Lucilla, Gladiator 2 will also feature Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, and Pedro Pascal. But, you’ll need to wait a while until we see anything from the movie, as it is not set to release until November 22, 2024.
