My Beautiful Paper Smile, a new adventure horror game, will be entering early access in late Spring.
Developed by Two Star Games and produced by Vicarious Publishing, My Beautiful Paper Smile is a game full of twisted science and dark obsessions. You will play as one of the Joyous, masked children trained in an underground facility to be perfect — any failure on behalf of the Joyous results in harsh, unforgiving punishment. But when a voice speaks to you, a child, as you sleep, you are compelled to try and escape.
Using Unreal Engine 4, My Beautiful Paper Smile has a distinctive pencil-sketch art style, drawn in such a way as to convey discomfort. The game’s horror will focus not on jump scares and gore, but rather an oppressive, uneasy atmosphere. It is under these conditions that players are tasked with solving puzzles in order to escape. However, you will discover dark, chilling secrets along the way.
Chapters 1 and 2 of My Beautiful Paper Smile will launch together when the game enters early access on Steam this Spring. Chapter 3 will be included as a part of a major update. Chapter 4, the concluding chapter, will be available once the game launches in full.
A single developer, Gavin Eisenbeisz, runs two Star Games. My Beautiful Paper Smile will be the studio’s debut game. My Beautiful Perfect Smile is also the first title for Vicarious Publishing, a new publishing company from Vicarious PR.
By all accounts, though, the developer and the publisher seem to be off to a good start. With a gorgeous, if unsettling, art style, My Beautiful Perfect Smile is undoubtedly intriguing. It is reminiscent of the excellent Little Nightmares, and if it is anything like that game, then we are in for a treat. And since it is important to support independent developers, make sure to keep an eye out for it this Spring.
Speaking of horror games, Resident Evil 3’s release is getting closer now, and we are very excited about it. And if you are a Kojima fan, you might have something spooky to look forward to.
