A white Ohio woman’s joke about a brief sidewalk encounter has landed her in hot water online after viewers accused her of turning an awkward collision with a Black woman into something more threatening than the video actually showed.
TikTok user @rymichaels posted the clip with the words, “My life actually flashed before my eyes,” after she stepped backward into the path of a woman walking behind her. The two briefly collided, and the woman gave her a noticeable look before continuing on. While @rymichaels apparently found the moment funny, critics argued that the caption encouraged viewers to interpret the Black woman’s reaction as threatening.
Despite deleting the original video, other TikTok users continued sharing it online. The clip showed the woman standing in the street and laughing with someone. As she stepped backward, the Black woman ran into her and looked at her in a way some viewers interpreted as anger, while others thought she looked confused.
The brief encounter might have ended there if not for the way @rymichaels described it. Text over the video read, “My life actually flashed before my eyes,” while the caption added, “Haha I thought it was over for me.”
Some viewers interpreted the posts as a joke about the woman’s expression, while critics believed the wording portrayed the Black woman as dangerous despite the footage showing little more than a collision and her reaction afterward.
Many viewers criticized the video for what they believed reinforced racist stereotypes portraying Black people as aggressive or threatening. Critics argued that the ‘life flashed before my eyes’ caption encouraged viewers to interpret the woman’s expression as threatening, despite the brief encounter leaving her actual reaction unclear.
TikTok user @loneivery was among those who reshared the clip. He criticized the woman and commenters who accused black people of always being angry. He also alleged that the woman knew what she was doing when she posted the video.

Viewers Question Ohio Woman’s Reaction to Sidewalk Encounter
Many viewers couldn’t understand why such a brief encounter was presented as frightening. “She was just confused…? U make a face when ur confused,” one commenter wrote.
Others believed the video’s framing carried a racial undertone. “THEYRE always trying to find a reason to call us angry,” one viewer argued. Another was surprised by some of the responses appearing under the original post, writing, “I SAW THIS AND THE COMMENTS CAUGHT ME SOO OFF GUARD. Like why are we being BLATANTLY racist.”
TikTok user @loneivery was among those who reshared the video and accused @rymichaels of knowing how viewers would interpret it. However, that remains his interpretation of her intentions rather than something the footage itself establishes.
The backlash eventually extended beyond the original video. @rymichaels deleted the post, and she disabled comments on her other TikTok videos. She has not publicly explained what she meant by the joke or responded to accusations that race played a role in how she described the encounter.
