Karaoke is one of the few pastimes that really unites the world through the shared love of music. Something about choosing your favorite song and singing over an instrumental version of it in front of an audience is just exhilarating. What’s even more fun is when someone joins you in a duet. Everyone at a karaoke bar in Nashville, Tennessee, was met with the surprise of a lifetime when a bouncer sang the male parts of The Phantom of the Opera as a duet with the woman currently on the mic. Personally, I wish I had been there to witness it myself.
Cross-Eyed Critters is a popular karaoke bar and restaurant that is famous for the strange animatronics that adorn the stage. In the above video, you can see the animatronics in the background while a karaoke night commences. The woman on stage is singing The Phantom of the Opera, which was popularized by the eponymous play by Andrew Lloyd Webber. However, the song itself is a duet, and she didn’t have anyone on stage who appeared to be taking on the role. Suddenly, when the male part arrived, the singer took a deep breath and began, but things quickly took a turn when a loud and deep voice came over the speakers instead.
You can see that the singer is visibly confused, searching around the bar until she finally spots the culprit: one of the bouncers. From offstage, a bouncer had grabbed a microphone and took it upon himself to complete the male parts of the song as part of the duet. The song and play as a whole play a prominent role in the lives of people who were or are currently in some kind of theatre troupe.
Commentators were quick to note this, with one of the top comments saying, “You just lived everyone’s high school musical fantasy.” Honestly, the look on the bouncer’s face when he hopped on stage looks like he had been waiting his entire life for this single moment. It isn’t every day you get to portray the Angel of Music in front of a bunch of drunk karaoke patrons.
It was also not lost on viewers how the confusion pressed on the singer’s face when the male voice came over the speaker was very Christine-coded, with another person saying, “The way you look for him is so phantom of the operaðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜.” Hopefully, the singer wasn’t upset at the bouncer for hopping into her light, but I don’t think the performance could have been better without him!
