A Nebraska woman took to TikTok to ask why a blowout means something different if you were to ask a White woman versus asking a Black woman. Honestly, as someone who has always struggled to find a hairdresser who can do exactly what I want with my hair, I found myself asking the same question after the video ended.
The above video, posted to the TikTok account @tlastratton, which belongs to Nebraska realtor Tia Stratton, shows Stratton asking the internet a serious question. She begins by telling the story of a legendary blowout she’d gotten and how subsequent blowouts have not compared.
For context, a blowout is a specific hairstyle that requires a blow-dryer and a brush to shape the hair for a smoother flow. Realistically, achieving this cannot be easy if you aren’t an experienced hairstylist.
She then explains that after walking into a salon she’d never been to before and getting a Black hairdresser, she tried to detail exactly what she wanted. Despite the hairdresser telling Stratton that she knew what she wanted, Stratton confessed that she had told other hairdressers the same thing, only to leave the chair with the opposite of what she wanted.
Fortunately, this woman really did know what she was doing. When the appointment was over, she left the salon with even more confidence than when she entered.
She ends the video asking viewers if they know why there is a difference between asking a White woman for a blowout versus asking a Black woman for a blowout. The entire internet must have been in those comments, acknowledging that Black women know their way around hair. In fact, one of the top comments says, “Black girls know BALL when it comes to hair ๐ฅฐ.”
Other comments were a lot more straightforward, with another saying, “Trust black women.” Interestingly enough, one of the comments that the creator even responded to, agreeing, said, “I feel like blowout to us means Victoria Secret hair.”
