Picking out a new home in the area that suits your lifestyle best is not always easy to do. It can be a fun and exciting journey, but there’s always something. Imagine you move into a new home and expect everything will be smooth sailing in those first few weeks. Now, imagine how it would feel if something awful happened only two weeks after you moved in. This may even leave you questioning if you made the right choice with your move, right? Well, this is what a man in Tennessee recently experienced with a lunatic with a gun.
The post was shared in r/Wellthatsucks by @bass_jockey, who proclaimed, “Neighbor just shot my house. I moved in two weeks ago.” They immediately followed this up with pictures of the destruction, where you can see bullet holes piercing through a shower, the glass completely knocked out of the shower door, and a bullet hole in the side of wood paneling. OP claimed the shots happened at midnight and said it was a “fun wakeup call.” The fact that it hit the glass door on the shower possibly saved OP and his partner’s lives.
OP went on to say that they called the police, who came out and found shells in the neighbor’s yard. They said, “I doubt there was any malicious intent, but as far as I’m concerned pointing a gun in a direction houses are and pulling the trigger is malicious enough.”
In an update, OP explained they stayed up all night waiting for an investigator to come out. After all, the police said that would happen. They were told their case was high priority because there was a child in the home at the time of the incident. However, nobody showed up or even took the time to call OP and his family. He also added, “We’re PRETTY sure another person on the next street over was either injured or arrested, as there were lots of emergency lights over there for a while last night. But I didn’t want to leave my house or family at the time to go see what was happening.” Unfortunately, this is the amount of care you tend to get from most police stations.
Reddit user @an_actual_lawyer attempted to give OP some good advice. They said, “This would be a great negligence claim/case/lawsuit against your neighbor.” They went on to say, “Possible damages we could recover would include damages to your home, your time, inconvenience, mental anguish, and punitive damages in most instances.” The lawyer also went on to explain they could be covered under their neighbor’s homeowner’s insurance. Redditors under this comment joked, “I declare that you are now my lawyer.”
No matter what happens, in a situation like this, it’s normal to feel panicked and unsure about your next steps. It also raises questions for OP about their future safety. One person assured them, “If you’re renting you can probably legally break the lease due to lack of safety and habitability.” It’s never advisable to stay in an unsafe situation just because you fear there is nowhere else to go.
