We’re in an age where superhero movies and TV shows are all the rage. Netflix has long been building on the hype with shows like The Umbrella Academy, Marvel dramas, and soon The Sandman. Their next superhero show to premiere is Jupiter’s Legacy, a highly ambitious multigenerational saga.

For those who don’t know, Jupiter’s Legacy is based on the popular comics written by Mark Millar with art by Frank Quitely. Jupiter’s Legacy is yet another interesting twist on the superhero genre. The series follows a new generation of superheroes who struggle to live up to the reputation of their successful parents. The show boasts a strong cast, including Josh Duhamel (The Utopian), Tyler Mane (Blackstar), Leslie Bibb (Lady Liberty), Ben Daniels (Brainwave), Elena Kampouris (Chloe Sampson), Matt Lanter (Skyfox), Andrew Horton (Paragon), and Mike Wade (Fitz Small).

Last month, there was a teaser confirming a release date of May 7. Now, we’ve finally got a much more interesting first look teaser. Check it out below:

As trailers go, this is quite unique. It’s exciting to see how accurately they’ve captured Quietly’s impressive art in live-action.  Jupiter’s Legacy marks just one of many Mark Millar comics getting adaptations. In 2017, Netflix acquired Millarworld, which opened the doors to many adaptations, including a TV series for American Jesus.

Both Mark Millar and Frank Quitely are executive producers, joined by Steven S. DeKnight, James Middleton, Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, Dan McDermott, and Sang Kyu Kim.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Millar compared his superhero epic to Lord of the Rings. Of course, Jupiter’s Legacy isn’t a medieval fantasy epic — far from it — but it shares a similar depth and scope. Also, Millar believes it will endure in a similar way:

“I  wanted to do the superhero Lord of the Rings that would be timeless and just a bumper collection of books people would be reading in 50 or 100 years time.”

Comparing anything to the works of J.R.R Tolkien is high praise indeed. Let’s hope it lives up to the hype. Jupiter’s Legacy drops on Netflix on May 7, 2021.
