Netflix has just released a trailer for a new original series that critics and journalists alike cannot stop talking about. The new show is called Stranger Things and as you can see via the below trailer it looks like a good old fashioned creep fest.
The trailer features many classic horror/thriller story tropes; aloof psychic girl and/or child, missing boy, worried mother, the local policeman, government conspiracy, general oddness. It looks like it has a chance to be good, and it is generating a lot of buzz online. Here are a couple of quotes:
Netflix’s official description states “Set in Hawkins Indiana in the 1980’s, Stranger Things chronicles the search for a young boy who vanishes into thin air under highly suspicious circumstances. His mother (Winona Ryder) opens an investigation into the boy’s disappearance with local authorities that unravels a series of mysteries involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces, and one very strange little girl. A love letter to the ubiquitous cult classics of the 80’s, Stranger Things is also a coming of age story for the boy’s three closest friends that draws them into a world where mysteries lurk beneath the surface.”
io9 had this to say: “Kids on BMX bikes cruising misty suburban streets at night, Hazmat suit-clad figures with flashlights, a pigtailed blonde moppet, a wide-eyed boy, a desperate mother … all that appears to be missing from Netflix’s new series Stranger Things is a lovable, candy-obsessed alien, otherwise it’d be E.T.”
The trailer does look pretty top notch, but as many a movie fan can attest, they can be fairly unrepresentative of the end product. Fans excited for the show will just have to wait and see. Stranger Things premieres on Netflix on July 15th.
Are you super excited by the possibilities that this trailer hints at? Are you more of a reserved media mogul, who will hold off on judging Stranger Things until you have had a chance to watch it?
