The free-to-play MMORPG Neverwinter is getting an update that will allow players to choose a new race, explore more of Undermountain, and delve into the history behind the gith and mind flayers.
One of the more interesting choices from Neverwinter: Uprising is the option to play as a gith, a Dungeons and Dragons race of humanoid-like creatures that constantly fight among themselves.
The new addition won’t launch for another month, but Cryptic Studios did release a short teaser for what to expect from Uprising.
The video is only 34 seconds long and gives fans a small amount of detail about the update. It seems mind flayers are a theme Wizards of the Coast is running with this year as they were featured heavily in the trailer for Baldur’s Gate 3. Well, they’re also hovering front and center in Uprising.
In D&D lore, the mind flayers and gith have been at war for decades. The illithid enslaved the gith until they were able to break away and build a life of their own. However, their escape from the Underdark split them into two different and unique sects; the githyanki and githzerai.
The githyanki became ruthless pirates and raiders after their escape from the creatures of the Underdark. While the githzerai gained psionic abilities and chose a more secluded and monastic lifestyle.
Uprising’s introduction of the gith race appears to be setting up a new campaign for the game. Players will get to visit Stardock, a hidden gith base inside of an asteroid. There will also be new enemies and characters to interact with.
Another addition featured in Uprising is the introduction of a new trial. This will pit characters against the mad wizard known as Halaster Blackcloak, the antagonist in the fifth edition book Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage.

A new PVP map will also be available, an entire fashion system overhaul, and the early game zones and stories are being revamped.
I’ve spent hours questing in Neverwinter and am excited to finally be able to try and bring down Halaster. While adding the gith race is intriguing, I wish Cryptic would add in duergar and gnomes as playable races soon too.
Neverwinter: Uprising launches August 13th for PC. The console edition has not been announced yet.
