The Call of Duty Zombies community has long existed in its own corner of the franchise, distinct from the Multiplayer and Battle Royale scenes. As a mode with a unique tone, pacing, and gameplay structure, Zombies deserves to be treated differently, both in design and in live service support. For years, players have asked for a more tailored approach, separate from the seasonal frameworks and content rhythms that define MP and BR. But if the latest Black Ops 7 leaks are accurate, that long-requested shift still isnโt happening.
Specifically, the latest rumors point to continued concerns about how Modern Zombies is being handled. If accurate, the upcoming iteration may once again include features that feel out of place in the mode, such as armor plating, generic HUD elements, Multiplayer-style map design, and Warzone-inspired mechanics like backpacks. These additions have appeared in Cold War, MWZ, Vanguard, and Black Ops 6, often to mixed reception. While Black Ops 6 made progress, like introducing a dedicated, mode-specific crew and moving away from lifeless operator crossovers, I’m worried the core identity of Zombies is still being diluted.
Now we’ve all heard that the OG dev team behind the classic Zombies era is returning to the scene. And if you’re like me, then you’re ecstatic about that prospect and the shift in gameplay that might bring. Today, though, my concerns based on the recent leak are centered on the inventory and armor plate system. Take a look:
Hereโs what the latest Black Ops 7 Zombies leak is telling us: nope. Iโd love for this to just be a rumor. Iโd be thrilled if we finally got a gameplay system that ditches armor plates and breaks from the Modern Zombies mold. But at this point, CoD leaks tend to carry as much weight as official announcements. So yes, if what weโre seeing is accurate, the Black Ops 6 Zombies experience is more or less what weโre getting again in Black Ops 7.

The real question is this: if Treyarch knows thereโs a huge part of the community that still loves classic Zombies –and theyโre even bringing back original characters– why not just give fans what theyโve been asking for? Just one map. One fully classic-style map that plays like Kino der Toten, down to the pacing, mechanics, and atmosphere. Then compare the engagement numbers with the newer Modern Zombies maps. See which one players actually stick with. How hard can that really be?
Not only that, but the insider also mentions that these leaks are for the Outbreak mode of Black Ops 7 Zombies. This rumor is right after we had what the developers had announced as the next “Twisted Chapter of Round-Based Zombies.” Classic.
