A few years ago, Amazon announced it was canceling its Lord of the Rings MMO, which was a blow for many fans of the genre and the series. Today, we have news of the same studio trying its hand at this project again. According to the interview, this is a brand-new project being helmed by those who developed New World. This could be good or bad, as the former MMO had a rough launch. On the other hand, this could be great because the team has much more experience now, which means a good product is on the way. Or at least that’s what we hope.

So far, we know the Lord of the Rings MMO by Amazon will launch on consoles and PC. It is uncertain what consoles they are talking about, but given the recent graphical quality of New World, many think it’ll be next-gen only. According to the news, the studio aims to create a high-quality product while remaining faithful to the series.

It is nice that the series is getting a new MMO by Amazon since we only have Lord of the Rings Online. While the latter isn’t a bad game, it hasn’t aged well. Staying fresh and innovating in a market full of successful MMOs like FFXIV or WoW is important. It is still uncertain how they’ll do it or if the game will play similarly to New World, but we hope that isn’t the case. If it is, we pray it doesn’t launch with many issues.
A lot is riding on Amazon’s shoulders now that they’ve taken this huge IP, and we can only hope they release a great product in the future. We can only ask that they take their time to create something good and polished.
