With Trump back in power, many of his allies are working hard to make sure his influence sticks and to silence anyone who might try to stand in his way. One of the ways they are doing this is by clearing the path for ICE to continue arresting immigrants without facing any resistance. To make that happen, some lawmakers in Louisiana came up with what they believe is a great idea: introducing two new bills that directly assist ICE agents.
The first is Senate Bill 15, which criminalizes both law enforcement officers and everyday citizens who refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. Then there is Senate Bill 100, which requires state agencies to track and report the immigration status of anyone who receives public services in Louisiana.
Supporters of these bills claim they are about public safety and fiscal accountability. They argue that the laws will help assess how much undocumented immigrants cost the state and will make communities safer overall.
But many people are not buying that. Critics of these Louisiana bills are calling the bills deeply invasive and dangerous, saying they infringe on the freedoms of ordinary people and increase the likelihood of wrongful arrests by ICE and other law enforcement agents. More than that, these measures are expected to push immigrants further into the shadows, making them afraid to seek help even in moments of real desperation.
People online are also voicing strong disagreement with the proposed new bills geared to help ICE. One Redditor wrote, “This country is dystopian AF. Cops are in favor of this shit, then wonder why no one respects or trusts them. F*** the police.”
Others raised questions about whether the new laws would target businesses that knowingly hire undocumented immigrants. Many users pointed out the double standard at play. While individuals who support or protect immigrant communities are being targeted by ICE and Trump supporters, wealthy business owners who exploit undocumented labor continue to operate without consequence.
One user even shared a personal story involving a family member. They wrote,
“I have a jacka** extended family member who owns a construction business, is a huge Trump supporter and openly against immigration, but strictly employs immigrants to avoid paying reasonable wages. Why don’t they go after the CEOs of these types of companies? The kicker is that he’s a freakin’ immigrant himself AND a felon. The ‘got mine’ mentality is dumb as h***. I truly hope these kinds of people face justice one day.”
