One of the most talked-about episodes of Riverdale Season Three is the upcoming flashback episode. And, to further hype fans, EW has managed to get hold of some hot images of the action.
The flashback episode is notable in that it stars the main teenage cast as their parents. This means that KJ Apa will don his natural black hair to play Archie’s dad Fred and Camilla Mendes will wear a schoolgirl uniform to portray Veronica’s mother Hermione. And that’s just the start!
Check out a cool photo of the ‘teenage parents’ below…
It’s important to mention the flashback episode is not some mere novelty filler. It’s actually a key part of the overarching mystery of the third season. Indeed, it would appear the kids of Riverdale inherited their mystery-solving tendencies from their parents…
As executive producer, Robert Aguire-Sacasa explains in a recent EW interview:
One of the things that the kids discover pretty early on is that the murder victims in the present were playing a game called Gryphons & Gargoyles, which is of course the Rivderdale version of Dungeons & Dragons. And what our kids in the present discover is that their parents, when they were in high school, were also playing this game and there was a similar murder that happened in the past.
Given the board game is riddled with supernatural imagery, it’s not too much of a stretch to suggest this will really ramp up the show’s supernatural element. As if floating demon babies and bloody demonic sacrifices weren’t enough to deal with in the town of Riverdale…
But hey, cheer up, the cast still look CW levels of pretty – even if they appear a little different. Lili Reinhart, who plays Betty and the teenage version of her mother in the episode, says that Alice will be a tad different from how we usually know her.
Back in the day, Alice was a serpent and it shows. Not only does she have a ‘street gang’ vibe about her dress sense, but her Serpent status “gives her young personality a lot”, according to Reinhart. So, don’t expect too much of the uptightness her adult self usually exhibits.
But do expect a good 90s vibe and twentysomething teenagers solving mysteries while producing Hollywood-level wisecracks as they do it.
So, apart from the 90s vibe, not that different of a tone.
Look out for this special episode November 7 on the CW in the United States – and a day after on Netflix everywhere else.
