Marvel is about to introduce the world to a new Punisher with this week’s Punisher #1. But first, the publisher is teasing this new vigilante’s debut with previews that show Frank Castle’s replacement in action. This new series comes from writer David Pepose and artist Dave Wachter and has been highly anticipated since July. During SDCC, Marvel revealed a new Punisher named Joe Garrison would be picking up the skull moniker for the series. Other than the fact that he is a retired S.H.I.E.L.D. black ops agent, fans don’t know much about this new hero. At least until now.
A New Punisher
The need for a new Punisher stemmed from Frank Castle’s journey earlier this year. Throughout his most recent series, Castle’s Punisher became the secret weapon of The Hand. This gave the gun-wielding vigilante superpowers, including strength, speed, and demonic energy. As his killing got out of control, many Marvel heroes were forced to fight Castle. However, his new powers meant he was more difficult to kill, and the heroes were only able to subdue him. So, Castle used his remaining power to warp to another universe, Weirdworld. Here, Castle is a guardian of children and not an unstoppable machine of vengeance.
Now, the role of Punisher is up for grabs, and Joe Garrison is stepping up. The synopsis for this new series wants to know if this is Frank Castle 2.0 or something else entirely. And will this new path of vengeance leave Garrison alive in the end?
Previews
Previews for the new Punisher series open on a pair of detectives in New York. The duo is investigating the remains of a wrecked building when they stumble upon a bomb. As they get to work on this, the new Punisher takes matters into his own hands. He visits the Black Dragon Club, where members of the Inner Demon Gang hang out. With a skull on chest and gun in hand, this new Punisher is taking a page out of Frank Castle’s book. Meaning he will do whatever is necessary to get to the bottom of all this.
Punisher #1 is on sale 11/8.
