The most anticipated night of Jay-Z’s historic New York homecoming nearly collapsed at the gates, and when the rap icon finally faced his crowd after midnight, he explained exactly why he made them wait.
Sunday’s “Extra Innings” finale in New York was supposed to open its gates at 8 p.m. Instead, crowd surges at multiple entrances triggered a full lockdown that left thousands of paying ticketholders stranded outside, and Jay-Z did not take the stage until 12:16 a.m. The FDNY told News 12 that six people were hurt in the chaos, all expected to be OK.
When he finally appeared, the rapper addressed it head on. “Let me explain the delay to you guys,” he said, per The Hollywood Reporter. “It was like 10,000 people outside, and we closed all the doors, and somebody rushed the door. They closed the door for you guys’ safety and everyone’s safety outside. There’s 10,000 people outside; I don’t want to start the music and people get trampled. I’m really sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to make sure everyone was OK.“
A joint statement from the Yankees, Roc Nation, and Live Nation confirmed how ugly it got, saying “hundreds of individuals in large groups, who did not have tickets to tonight’s performance, stormed over peaceful ticketholders, and in some cases, breached security.“
Then came the answer only Jay-Z could deliver. Per Billboard, he ripped through 44 songs, headlined by Rihanna’s first public performance since her Super Bowl three years ago. “Y’all know I’m rusty, right?” she teased before “Run This Town.” Beyoncé returned for a smoldering “Drunk in Love,” and Usher, Pharrell Williams, Clipse, and Jeezy kept the surprises coming until fireworks lit the sky near 3 a.m.
The finale capped a record-shattering weekend celebrating 30 years of Reasonable Doubt and 25 years of The Blueprint, with Saturday’s Eminem-assisted show setting Yankee Stadium’s all-time concert attendance record at 45,832. The one thing that never came: a new album announcement, despite the haircut signal that opened the run.
Fury at the Gates, Euphoria Inside
The reaction split right down the stadium walls. Outside, fans were furious in real time, with one viral post cited by TMZ reading: “People are throwing up, fainting and asking for medics at the the Jay Z show. This is insane, inhuman and very dangerous.“
The disappointment quickly found a second target: “This caused a 4 hour delay? Plus no album release date” one fan grumbled. But plenty took Jay’s side. “Im just happy to know that they take this stuff seriously. I wanna know im good where im standing! Jay don’t play and I respect it,” one supporter wrote, while another added: “silly. That’s why the delay was long…. Safety for everyone was the primary concern.” And one fan predicted what comes next for the gatecrashers: “Tiktok is going to identify and shame them all“
With London, Paris, and Los Angeles dates ahead and a Rick Rubin HBO docuseries this fall, the last question is whether the album hint pays off.
