America. The land of the free, the land of fast food. And most certainly, the land of rampant gun violence and firearm lovers everywhere you look and turn. Despite numerous mass shootings almost on a daily basis, one thing we certainly don’t lack is a penchant for shooting our fellow citizens. But that changed when New York City police bragged about a 30-year record with no gun violence, even if that victory was pretty short-lived.
Despite recently going viral on Reddit, posted by the user named Due-Challenge-9207 in the r/InterestingasFu*k Reddit page, this post was done back on January 24th by the NYC police themselves on their X page. However, shortly following a record time of peace, somebody was shot and ended the streak mere hours after it was announced. Here is the original statement by NYC police.
For the first time in 30 years, there have been 0 shooting victims in New York City for a 5-day period. This is the longest we’ve gone without a shooting victim since the beginning of the CompStat era and is a result of the brave work that the members of the NYPD do every day.
Several folks on Reddit laughed at the irony of the statement, made pretty silly remarks mocking the cops, and bemoaned the state of the economy at the moment.
“*Without a shooting that you know of”
“Bullets are expensive they are getting back to basics out there w cutlery.”
“Bullets? In this economy? We can’t even afford to throw stones at each other because we got to bring them home to boil for stone soup”
“The Government workers reporting them probably got fired.”
“Trump will still claim the win.”
Let’s hope in the future, news like this can actually be the norm, rather than the exception, but trying to convince Americans to use LESS guns in the immediate and probably far future will more than likely never happen. The only hope as most posters were saying, the economy has gotten so tough, that actually purchasing guns and ammo is becoming incredibly expensive, so that might be the only saving grace in the short term.
