We all know that certain events in a city tend to affect those living there. However, some truly bring any place to a halt, and in this case, we’re talking about strikes. For the unaware, those in New York have been facing the recent LIRR strike, which has brought the rail line to a full stop and has affected New Yorkers going in and out of Long Island. While many already knew about this, people have started sharing videos showing just how bad traffic has gotten, and some are now realizing that rail transit is much better than driving.

The LIRR is on strike – I am just Loving driving to Brooklyn!.❤️

The short video comes from user Prior-Concentrate090, who shared it on the New York subreddit. As you can see in the clip, OP decided to record the traffic that ensued due to the LIRR strike.

For the unaware, the strike has been going on for three days, and, at the time of writing, neither the MTA nor the union has reached an agreement. However, as the strike goes on, some New York commuters have started sharing the chaos of what is happening in the background, or rather, on the roads, and as you can see, it isn’t pretty.

The clip shows a long line of vehicles driving at an extremely slow pace on a highway going into Brooklyn, according to the OP. You can see, however, that the traffic is only stalling when Brooklyn-bound, as the road on the left seems almost unaffected, at least for now.

With this video out, many started discussing just how powerful rail transit is, and how, without it, the whole city can come to a halt and affect hundreds of people.

New York Residents Shocked After Seeing the Aftermath of the Strike

With the strike taking its toll on all citizens, some Redditors started talking about just how much power the rail transit holds, not only on those who use it, but also on those who don’t.

“This is an excellent demonstration of how superior rail is for urban transit. Expensive at the beginning, but the capacity of multiple lanes of freeway and streets.“

“Really shows how superior real transit is to cars. Yet people keep arguing about supporting car infrastructure.“

Still, others believe that this is a normal sight, and that traffic like the one in the video should be expected.

“I take Uber a lot for work all over, and I’m gonna be honest, this looks totally normal. I actually was in much worse traffic the other day on the Grand Central heading onto Central Queens.“

In the end, many agree that the LIRR strike will continue to affect commuters and many other New Yorkers. Many are hoping for both parties to reach an agreement, but negotiations seem stalled at the moment.
