A driver in New York was caught on video chasing a cyclist through a bike lane before the confrontation escalated into an apparent attempt to take the cyclist’s bicycle.

The cyclist shared the video online and provided additional context about what he says led to the confrontation. According to him, the driver nearly struck him while making a right turn. In response, the cyclist said he yelled and gave the side of the driver’s car “a little tap” with his hand, adding that it did not cause any damage. He alleged that the driver then began chasing him down the bike lane for an entire avenue, prompting him to start recording the encounter.

In the video, the driver can be seen driving in the bike lane while following the cyclist. At one point, he appeared to accelerate, closing the distance between his car and the bicycle. When the cyclist stopped at a red light, the driver got out of his vehicle and confronted him. “What was all that for?” he asked before accusing the cyclist of riding too fast.

Once the driver noticed that the cyclist was recording him, the confrontation appeared to escalate into a brief struggle as he seemingly tried to grab the phone. “Someone film this [expletive],” the cyclist called out to nearby bystanders while the driver repeatedly demanded his phone. The driver then told the cyclist to delete the video.

As the cyclist got off his bike, the driver pushed it to the ground while continuing to repeat, “Delete it.” When the cyclist asked why, the driver grabbed the bicycle and appeared to try to take it. The cyclist immediately held onto the bike, and the two briefly struggled over it before the driver eventually let go. The video ended with the driver once again demanding that the cyclist delete the recording. As of now, the cyclist has not shared any updates about what happened after the video ended.

Viewers Criticize New York Driver After Shocking Video

The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers were shocked by the New York driver’s behavior, prompting widespread criticism. Several people also urged the cyclist to report the incident to the police. “You have his face and his plate, take it to the cops. There’s a reason he wanted you to delete the video,” one person wrote. Another commenter said, “In case you weren’t aware, threatening violence while demanding to take your property (phone and bike) has a name. It’s called robbery. You should have called 911 and reported it as such.”

More viewers said they believed the driver should face legal consequences for his actions. “Total psychopath. You have his plates. Get him for all of us. I had a similar incident years ago and I wish I had the plates. I don’t know why driving makes people act like this,” one person wrote. Another commenter said, “He needs to be arrested and never be allowed to drive again. We allow way too much anti social behavior in the U.S., and people become entitled [expletive] like this man.”

The video sparked a conversation about how quickly road rage incidents can escalate into dangerous confrontations, especially when vulnerable road users such as cyclists are involved. It also led to discussions about the importance of documenting and reporting alleged aggressive driving and threats so that authorities can determine whether further action is warranted.
