Outrage erupted online after a Dunkin’ Donuts worker in New York was allegedly filmed washing his feet inside the restaurant’s kitchen.

The incident reportedly happened at a Dunkin’ Donuts location inside the Staten Island Ferry. A woman passing by the shop noticed what appeared to be the employee washing his feet inside the kitchen and began filming. The video showed the employee standing in front of a sink on what appeared to be a prayer rug.

The employee was seen repeatedly washing his feet, using his hand to collect water from the sink before applying it to his feet several times. No other employees appeared to intervene while the woman filmed the incident. She eventually walked away, calling the situation “disgusting.” It is unclear whether the company will respond to the video or take any action.

Many viewers assumed that the employee was Muslim because washing the feet in this manner is associated with wudu, the Islamic ritual of purification performed before prayer. He also appeared to be standing on a prayer rug, which further led viewers to believe that he was preparing for prayer. However, the employee’s religion and the reason for his actions have not been independently confirmed.

Muslim employees may be entitled to reasonable opportunities to practice their religion at work, depending on workplace policies and applicable laws. However, accommodating religious practices does not mean an employee can perform personal washing in an inappropriate area. If the Dunkin’ employee was performing wudu, washing his feet in a kitchen where food is handled could raise hygiene and food-safety concerns, regardless of his reason for doing so.

Personal washing would generally be more appropriate in a restroom or designated washing area. They should be away from food, preparation surfaces, and cooking equipment. This means workplaces can accommodate religious practices while still maintaining sanitation standards. They should make sure that one does not compromise the other.

Viewers Outraged After New York Employee Is Seen Washing His Feet

The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers expressed outrage over the employee washing his feet inside the kitchen. Because some assumed he was preparing for prayer, others defended his actions. “Basically getting ready to pray and for sure he cleans his hands after not a big deal,” one person wrote. The woman who filmed the incident disagreed. She argued, “It’s around food he doing it in the same sink that they utensil to cook and make drinks in it’s unsanitary.”

More viewers continued criticizing the employee over the incident. “Im a Muslim and what he’s doing ain’t right when u at work place,” one person wrote. Another commenter said, “Religion or not, washing your feet a few inches away from the food area is wild. There has to be a better way, Mamdani find this man a better religious accommodation.” Someone else added, “And that’s why I never buy anything off that damn boat cause ewwww‼!”

The video sparked a broader conversation about how employees should avoid washing their feet in kitchen areas. This is even when preparing for prayer. It also led to discussion about the need for businesses to provide appropriate accommodations and training. This is so employees can practice their religious beliefs without compromising food-safety and hygiene standards.
