The most famous judge in television history just delivered her final ruling on herself after 30 years. Judy Sheindlin is stepping away from the camera, and the bench stays in the family.

The New York icon, 83, revealed in a People interview this week that she is retiring from on-camera television, with her Prime Video series Judy Justice wrapping in October. The Brooklyn-born former Manhattan family court judge, who became the highest-paid personality on television, framed the exit in classic Judy fashion: “I don’t want to do hair and makeup anymore, but I still want my message to get out there.“

She is leaving the frame at peace with the whole run, and her summation of three decades is the closing argument of a woman with nothing left on the docket. “I don’t think that I’ve ever been this content before,” Sheindlin said. “I don’t have to prove anything else. I did it.” The docket ahead: afternoon naps, family time, and, in the most 2026 career move imaginable, developing an adult animated series based on the viral AI Baby Judge Judy videos.

The gavel, however, is not going far. On Monday, her son Adam Levy debuts his own syndicated courtroom show, Adam’s Law, which Sheindlin herself produces, arriving almost exactly 30 years after Judge Judy first hit the air in 1996 and turned a Manhattan family court judge into a household institution. Her endorsement carries the weight of the entire genre she built: “There aren’t a lot of people who can carry a half hour on their own unscripted. He has what it takes.” And in a very Judy piece of honesty about her own kid, she added: “Maybe eight years ago he wasn’t ready. He’s ready now.” Levy previously shared the screen on Prime Video’s Tribunal Justice; Monday he carries the family franchise alone.

The resume she closes is untouchable with 25 years of Judge Judy as syndication’s top-rated court show and the throne it built as television’s highest-paid star, the groundbreaking streaming pivot to Judy Justice in 2021, this summer’s Justice on Trial, and a persona so definitive that “Judge Judy” became the American shorthand for televised justice itself.

The industry gets its formal goodbye on September 22, when CBS airs Judge Judy: Unfiltered, Unforgettable, a 90-minute primetime special celebrating her three decades on the television bench, back on the network where the phenomenon began.

Court Is Adjourned

The farewells poured in as a generational roll call. “Thanks for keeping us entertained and quite scared on sick days your honor,” one viewer wrote, while another spoke for the other end of the couch: “My grandpa’ favourite show, happy retirement judge Judy.” One fan supplied the epitaph, “she played NO GAMES!!!” and even the cartoon pivot found its defender: “honestly thats the most judge judy thing she couldve done.“

Thirty years, two networks, one streaming revolution, and roughly a million withering stares later, the sharpest tongue in television is resting her case exactly the way she ruled: on her own terms, with the verdict already in.

The message got out there. Now her son inherits the courtroom, starting Monday.
