Outrage erupted online after Virginia-born singer Chris Brown received a suspended eight-month sentence for an attack that took place in the U.K.
The attack took place in the early hours of February 19, 2023, at Tape, a private members’ nightclub in Mayfair, London, where Chris Brown attacked music producer Abraham Diaw. According to prosecutors, Brown struck Diaw twice on the head with a heavy glass tequila bottle before hitting him again as Diaw turned away. Brown’s vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also joined the assault, punching Diaw in the head.
Prosecutors said the men continued attacking Diaw as he tried to escape and kicked him while he was on the floor. Diaw was taken to St Mary’s Hospital with head and knee injuries. In July 2026, Brown and Akinlolu pleaded guilty to affray, while prosecutors dropped more serious charges, including assault and attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, as part of the plea agreement.
Variety reported that the Grammy Award-winning singer received a suspended eight-month sentence, allowing him to avoid jail time over what prosecutors described as a “vicious and unprovoked” attack.
Judge Tony Baumgartner also addressed Brown before handing down the sentence. “I take account of your employment and long-established career in music. Your fame, commercial success and professional standing do not entitle you to special treatment. The law applies equally to everyone,” he told him.
Previous Charges The Singer Faced
Chris Brown’s latest sentence is not the first time he has faced criminal charges involving violence. In 2009, he was charged with assault and making criminal threats following an attack on his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna. He later pleaded guilty to felony assault, while the criminal threats charge was dropped. Brown received five years of probation and was ordered to complete community labor and domestic violence counseling.
In 2013, Brown was arrested after allegedly punching a man outside a hotel in Washington, D.C. The charge was later reduced to misdemeanor assault, and Brown pleaded guilty in 2014. He was sentenced to time served.
Many fans online expressed anger over Chris Brown receiving a suspended eight-month sentence, arguing that he deserved jail time for the attack on Abraham Diaw. Some questioned how Brown could avoid prison despite the severity of the assault, while others pointed to his previous criminal convictions involving violence and argued that the sentence was too lenient. Their reactions reflected frustration among those who believed Brown’s celebrity status should not shield him from facing more serious consequences for his actions.
Fans Outraged Over Sentencing Of Virginia Singer
The majority of fans online were outraged over the sentence Virginia rapper Chris Brown received, arguing that he deserved a harsher punishment. “That’s why he keeps putting hands on people because he never faces actual consequences. Suspended for 12 months… what a joke,” one person wrote. Another person said, “The article says because it’s suspended for 12 months, he won’t serve those 8 months in prison, which is really [expletive] stupid.”
More fans criticized the sentence, with one person writing, “Sooo, Chris Brown suffers absolutely no consequences for his violent actions. Again.” Another person expressed frustration over Brown’s history of legal troubles, saying, “I feel like for the past 20 years, every couple weeks there’s news of this man being convicted of a massively destructive, often ‘unprovoked’, violent crime. No idea how he’s remained out walking around free. Just the epitome of a menace to society.”
Brown’s sentencing renewed calls for the singer to face more serious consequences for his actions. The news also brought renewed attention to his previous criminal charges involving violence.
