Everybody needs a little time to themselves every now and then. For anyone struggling with depression, treating yourself with a little kindness can go a long way. Sometimes, that means a spa day, or simply getting your hair done. Why? Honestly, you don’t need a reason. A hairdresser in New York found out a client with an upcoming appointment wasn’t feeling like herself. Instead of having her reschedule, she came up with the most heartwarming solution.
TikToker TheWekly — Mai — posted about a client she recently had. More importantly, she wanted to share what she did to make the client’s day a little easier. It seemed like she needed it, too. Mai, who works at a studio in New York, received a text from a client an hour before her appointment. Her client told her, “Hey, I’m really depressed. I don’t feel like being around anybody today.”
However, she did tell Mai, “But I really want my hair done.” Mai asked if she was in the mood to talk to anybody and the client told her no. With total understanding and compassion, Mai came up with a solution.
“I’ll do your hair in the back of the salon and you just won’t talk to me.” Mai says to her client. It was totally okay to avoid the “social aspects of getting your hair done” when you’re feeling low. It can be a lot to handle sometimes.
“You’re gonna come get your hair done and it’s gonna make you feel a hundred times better,” Mai told her client. That convinced them to come! Her client wore headphones while Mai gave her the spa treatment. Mai tells her TikTok audience that, as a client who was feeling down, this woman handled things the right way. She felt so good after, Mai got a text that said her client was feeling good enough to go out.
One commenter commended Mai, saying, “And that’s how you curate long term relationships with clients.”
Another commenter suggested, “You should offer silent appointments. You would be amazed at how many clients like this service when it’s offered. I have one stylist that does them almost exclusively and she is always booked. They are perfect for introverts or people who are just drained and need to recharge,” which makes sense.
If you’ve ever been at an extended hair appointment, you probably understand back-and-forth salon banter. Catching up with each other, talking about your lives. It’s a good opportunity to socialize, but one person’s party is another person’s nightmare. And sometimes, you just aren’t in the mood to talk.
