An elderly homeowner in New York got mad at a lawn care worker in a viral clip. The reason? The worker refused to quote an hourly rate, insisting that his company charges a flat one. This, in turn, sparked a heated online debate between those who agreed with the homeowner and those who didn’t.

TikTok user Money Maker Matt shared the interaction online. He posts a variety of content online, including his lawn care endeavors. This clip, in particular, stood out for its virality. It garnered 3.2 million views, 239,400 likes, and more than 7,200 comments.

The New York man arrived at the elderly couple’s home. A lady told him she wanted to redo all her lawn since they had just moved there. Moments later, the woman’s husband approached, and as Matt sped up the footage, it became clear that an argument was taking place.

Eventually, the video began playing normally, and the elderly man was recorded saying, “You’re not telling me what I need to hear at all.” He then added, “There’s no reason why you can’t tell us how much you’ll charge an hour.”

Matt, meanwhile, responded that the company he works for, Legendary Exterior Services, doesn’t quote hourly rates. The man was baffled, wondering how they do business, and Matt explained that they set the flat rate based on the job’s size.

The argument continued, with the New York man saying that Matt was capable of giving an hourly rate based on the size of the work. At one point, he even covered his eyes, trying to make the point that he was going blindly into the negotiation. His wife, meanwhile, was seen to be annoyed by his antics but remained playful.

In the end, Matt agreed to send over a quote to the elderly couple. At one point, the homeowner says, “I’m 83 years old, man. I’ve done a lot of business in my life, and this is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard,” expressing frustration with the pricing approach. As he said that, his wife hit him with an envelope.

Debate Erupts

The video sparked many responses.

Some were on the elderly man’s side. One viewer commented, “Homeowner isn’t wrong.” Another one agreed, saying, “He was schooling you, ngl.”

Others, meanwhile, were on Matt’s side. One user commented, “I prefer the price for the entire job instead of the hour.” Another one said, “Pricing based on the job is the correct way to do that as a business owner.”

The comments were pretty evenly split between the two sides. This, of course, enabled lots of discussions, which means higher engagement and, therefore, a video worth pushing to the masses.

It is unclear whether the homeowner accepted the quote, and the interaction has continued to circulate online as viewers share their perspectives.
