Two passengers riding a subway train in New York City recently got into a heated argument over whether filming a subway performer automatically requires payment. The tense moment, which was captured on video and later shared to TikTok, centered on a woman who made it her mission to police a foreign passenger for not immediately tipping an entertainer, even though he had recorded the performance.

According to the video, the male passenger, who identified himself as being from England, pulled out his phone to film a man performing for riders inside the subway car. A woman seated nearby, however, took issue with him filming and quickly made her opinion known. “If you’re gonna film him, you better give him money. Support the artist,” she told the man.

Clearly annoyed by the unsolicited instruction, the man responded that she did not have the right to tell him what to do, adding, “Why don’t you give him money if you’re so helpful?” The woman replied that she intended to do exactly that, but continued pressing the issue, insisting that filming without paying was wrong.

When the performance wrapped up, the woman followed through on her earlier statement and handed the performer money. The man, viewing it as her desperately trying to prove a point, immediately mocked her for it, calling her an “eager beaver” and saying she did not need to demonstrate anything.

The woman turned toward him with her brows furrowed and asked, “Why are you such a mean person?” to which the man responded, “What are you talking about?”

The performer, who was collecting donations from passengers using his cap, was later brought into the argument. When the man asked about his opinion on the matter, saying, “She said that if I film you, I have to pay you?”, the performer did not hesitate and replied, “No, it’s up to you.”

That moment effectively shut down the argument. The man seized on the response, telling the woman that even the performer disagreed with her stance. He emphasized that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that hers did not need to be imposed on others.

Despite this, the woman continued pressing the issue, accusing the man of filming people to put them “in a bad light,” herself included.

The man first challenged the claim and then turned back to the performer to praise him for the show. Shortly afterward, the woman exited the subway car with her companions. As she left, the man continued taunting her, seemingly satisfied with how the exchange ended.

Many viewers sided with the male passenger, agreeing that filming a public performance does not require payment. However, some people took issue with a separate remark in the video, in which the man told the performer to “get that Chinese money out.” The comment was criticized as unnecessary and inappropriate, particularly since the woman confronting him appeared to be Asian.

“Why are you being racist by saying ‘get that Chinese money out’? Everything else I understand, but why say that?” one person wrote.

Aside from that moment, other comments read, “Him filming doesn’t mean he has to pay the guy,” “I thought New York was the capital of ‘mind your business,’” and “She wanted the performer to want payment so bad.”
